Orladeyo is indicated for the routine prophylaxis of hereditary angioedema (HAE) in adults and pediatric patients aged 12 years and older. HAE is a rare, potentially life-threatening genetic disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of severe swelling affecting the hands, feet, face, airway, and gastrointestinal tract.
Orladeyo works by inhibiting plasma kallikrein, an enzyme that plays a key role in the inflammatory cascade. By blocking this enzyme, the medication reduces the production of bradykinin—a substance that increases vascular permeability and causes the swelling associated with HAE attacks.
Orladeyo is taken orally once daily with food. Common side effects may include abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea. Patients should discuss their complete medical history with their healthcare provider, as the medication may interact with certain other drugs. This is a brand-name medication and generic availability may vary.
