Treatment of trichomoniasis, giardiasis, amebiasis, bacterial vaginosis, and anaerobic bacterial infections. Also used for gynecological infections and surgical prophylaxis involving susceptible organisms.

As a nitroimidazole derivative, ornidazole works by entering microbial cells where it is reduced by ferredoxin or flavodoxin, producing cytotoxic metabolites that cause DNA strand breakage and inhibit nucleic acid synthesis, leading to cell death.

May cause gastrointestinal disturbances, headache, or dizziness. Should be avoided in patients with known hypersensitivity to nitroimidazoles. Use with caution during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Alcohol should be avoided during treatment due to potential disulfiram-like reactions.
