Treatment of moderate to severe dyspareunia (painful intercourse), vaginal dryness, and irritation associated with vulvar and vaginal atrophy (VVA) due to menopause. May also be used for moderate to severe vaginal dryness alone.
As a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM), ospemifene binds to estrogen receptors and acts as an estrogen agonist in vaginal tissue. This helps restore the vaginal epithelium, increase vaginal lubrication, reduce pH, and improve the overall health of vaginal tissues.
Osphena may increase risk of endometrial hyperplasia; women with a uterus should be monitored. Has contraindications similar to estrogen therapy including undiagnosed uterine bleeding, known/suspected breast cancer, history of blood clots or stroke. Common side effects include hot flashes, muscle spasms, and vaginal discharge. Requires prescription and should be used at the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration consistent with treatment goals.
