Paragard is indicated for use as a long-acting, reversible contraceptive for women who desire effective birth control for up to 10 years. It is also approved for use as emergency contraception when inserted within 5 days of unprotected intercourse.

Paragard is a T-shaped device wrapped in copper wire that is inserted into the uterus by a healthcare provider. The copper ions released create an inflammatory response in the uterine environment that is toxic to sperm, preventing fertilization of an egg.

Paragard does not contain hormones and therefore does not affect menstrual cycles or hormonal symptoms. It is a highly effective contraceptive method (>99% effective) but does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. Insertion may cause cramping and spotting, and heavier menstrual bleeding may occur. The device must be removed by a healthcare professional and can be replaced with a new device if continued contraception is desired. Women with a known copper allergy or Wilson's disease should not use Paragard.
