Paraplatin is primarily used to treat advanced ovarian cancer and is also used for lung cancer (particularly non-small cell lung cancer), as well as other solid tumors. It may be used alone or in combination with other chemotherapy agents.
As a platinum-based alkylating agent, Paraplatin binds to DNA strands and forms cross-links, preventing cancer cells from replicating their genetic material. This disruption ultimately leads to cancer cell death.
Common side effects include bone marrow suppression (low blood counts), nausea, vomiting, and potential kidney effects. Regular blood tests are required to monitor blood counts and kidney function. Patients should discuss all medications and allergies with their healthcare provider before treatment, as platinum-based drugs can cause allergic reactions.
