Treatment of advanced renal cell carcinoma (clear cell type) and advanced soft tissue sarcoma in patients who have received prior chemotherapy.

Inhibits multiple tyrosine kinase receptors including VEGFR-1, -2, and -3 (vascular endothelial growth factor receptors), PDGFR-α and -β, FGFR-1 and -3, Kit, and interleukin-2 receptor. This blocks tumor angiogenesis (new blood vessel formation) and tumor cell proliferation.

Taken once daily on an empty stomach (at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after food). Requires regular monitoring of liver function, blood pressure, and cardiac function. May cause serious side effects including hepatotoxicity, cardiac toxicity, hemorrhage, and gastrointestinal perforation. Should not be used during pregnancy.
