Pemoline was indicated for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adolescents, and was also sometimes prescribed for narcolepsy and excessive daytime sleepiness.

Pemoline is a CNS stimulant that works by enhancing dopaminergic and noradrenergic neurotransmission in the brain, increasing alertness and attention while reducing hyperactivity and impulsive behavior.

Pemoline has been discontinued in most countries including the United States due to rare but serious cases of acute liver failure. Regular liver function monitoring was required during treatment. Common side effects included insomnia, decreased appetite, and weight loss. It was contraindicated in patients with liver impairment.
