Treats bacterial infections including respiratory tract infections (such as strep throat and pneumonia), skin infections, middle ear infections, and other conditions caused by susceptible organisms. Often used as a follow-up treatment after penicillin injection when oral therapy is appropriate.
Penicillin V is a beta-lactam antibiotic that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). This weakens the bacterial cell wall, leading to bacterial death. It is effective only against actively growing and dividing bacteria that are susceptible to penicillin.
Should not be used in patients with penicillin allergy. Common side effects may include gastrointestinal symptoms like nausea and diarrhea. Must complete the full prescribed course even if symptoms improve. May interact with certain medications including methotrexate and blood thinners. Effectiveness may be reduced when taken with food for some formulations.
