Pentacel is used to vaccinate infants and young children against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), poliomyelitis, and invasive diseases caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b (including meningitis). It is part of the routine childhood immunization schedule.
As a combination vaccine, Pentacel contains inactivated toxins (toxoids) and antigenic components from multiple pathogens. It stimulates the immune system to produce protective antibodies against these diseases without causing the diseases themselves.
Pentacel is contraindicated in children with severe allergic reactions to any component of the vaccine. Common side effects may include fever, irritability, and injection site reactions. It should not be used for treatment of active infections. Vaccination schedules and appropriateness should be determined by a healthcare provider.
