Perforomist is used for maintenance treatment of bronchospasm in patients with COPD. It helps reduce symptoms such as shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing, but it is not a rescue medication and should not be used for acute bronchospasm relief.
Perforomist contains formoterol, a long-acting beta-2 agonist that relaxes the smooth muscles lining the airways. By stimulating beta-2 receptors in the lungs, it causes bronchodilation, which opens airways and makes breathing easier for approximately 12 hours per dose.
Perforomist is typically used twice daily (every 12 hours) as directed by a healthcare provider. It should not replace inhaled corticosteroids for patients who need them. As with other LABAs, there may be an increased risk of asthma-related death when used for asthma; however, this medication is specifically approved for COPD. Common side effects may include headache, tremor, and nervousness. Patients should not use Perforomist more frequently than prescribed and should always follow their healthcare provider's instructions.
