Phenytek is used to control generalized tonic-clonic seizures (grand mal seizures), complex partial seizures (psychomotor seizures), and temporal lobe seizures. It may also be used to prevent and treat seizures occurring during neurosurgery.
Phenytoin works by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels in neurons, which stabilizes neuronal membranes and prevents the excessive firing that leads to seizure activity. This reduces the spread of seizure discharges throughout the brain.
Phenytek should not be used for absence seizures as it may worsen them. Blood levels must be monitored regularly as phenytoin has a narrow therapeutic window. Do not crush or chew extended-release capsules. Avoid sudden discontinuation as it may trigger status epilepticus. Inform your doctor of any liver problems, as dosage adjustments may be needed.
