Treatment of constipation and bowel preparation before diagnostic procedures such as colonoscopy, radiology, or surgery. May also be used for management of bowel emptying in certain medical conditions.
As a stimulant laxative, picosulfurate works by directly stimulating nerve endings in the colon lining, increasing peristaltic contractions and promoting fluid and electrolyte secretion into the intestinal lumen. This accelerates the passage of stool through the bowel.
Should not be used long-term as it may lead to dependency and electrolyte imbalance. Contraindicated in patients with bowel obstruction, inflammatory bowel disease flare, or severe dehydration. May cause abdominal cramping, diarrhea, or nausea. Adequate fluid intake is essential during treatment. Consult a healthcare provider before use if pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking other medications.
