Pitavastatin is indicated for the treatment of primary hyperlipidemia and mixed dyslipidemia. It is used to reduce elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, and triglycerides in adults who have not responded adequately to diet and exercise alone.

Pitavastatin works by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis in the liver. By blocking this enzyme, it reduces the liver's production of cholesterol and increases the removal of LDL cholesterol from the bloodstream.

Common side effects include muscle pain, headache, and digestive issues. Rare but serious risks include liver damage and rhabdomyolysis. Patients should report unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness immediately. Regular liver function tests and lipid monitoring are recommended during treatment.
