Prevention of paralytic poliomyelitis caused by poliovirus Type 1. Used in routine childhood immunization schedules and mass vaccination campaigns during polio outbreak responses.
The vaccine contains inactivated (killed) poliovirus Type 1 (Mahoney strain) that stimulates the immune system to produce protective antibodies without causing disease. This provides humoral immunity against wild poliovirus infection.
Administered by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection as part of combination vaccines. Cannot cause vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPP) unlike oral polio vaccine (OPV). Part of the global polio eradication strategy transitioning from OPV to IPV. Contraindicated in individuals with severe allergic reactions to vaccine components.
