Adjunctive treatment for type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults who use mealtime insulin and have not achieved adequate glycemic control. It is not a substitute for insulin.

Pramlintide mimics human amylin, a peptide hormone that complements insulin by suppressing postprandial glucagon secretion, slowing gastric emptying, and promoting satiety. These combined actions help reduce blood sugar spikes after meals.

Must be administered separately from insulin (cannot be mixed) with appropriate dosing adjustments. Common side effects include nausea and hypoglycemia, particularly when combined with insulin. Not recommended for patients with gastroparesis or hypoglycemia unawareness.
