Praziquantel is used to treat schistosomiasis (bilharzia) caused by Schistosoma species, as well as infections from liver flukes (Clonorchis sinensis, Opisthorchis species) and intestinal tapeworms (Taenia species, Diphyllobothrium latum). It is also effective against neurocysticercosis in combination with other therapies.

Praziquantel causes rapid contraction of parasites by affecting their calcium channels, leading to paralysis and detachment from host tissues. The drug also damages the parasite's tegument, making it vulnerable to the host's immune system.

Praziquantel is generally well-tolerated but may cause dizziness, headache, or abdominal discomfort. It should be taken with food and not crushed or chewed due to its bitter taste. Patients with ocular cysticercosis should avoid treatment as drug-induced inflammation can damage the eye. A second dose 2-6 weeks after initial treatment may be needed for complete cure.
