Premarin is used to treat moderate to severe vasomotor symptoms of menopause (hot flashes, night sweats), urogenital symptoms (vaginal dryness, irritation), and to prevent postmenopausal osteoporosis. It may also be indicated for hypoestrogenism due to hypogonadism, castration, or primary ovarian insufficiency.
Premarin contains conjugated estrogens that replace the estrogen the body naturally decreases after menopause. As a form of hormone replacement therapy, it helps restore estrogen levels to alleviate menopausal symptoms and provide protective effects on bone health.
Premarin carries FDA warnings about increased risks of stroke, deep vein thrombosis, and endometrial cancer. It is contraindicated in pregnancy, women with known or suspected breast or estrogen-dependent cancers, liver dysfunction, or unexplained vaginal bleeding. Use should be at the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration consistent with treatment goals.
