Prevnar 20 is used to prevent pneumococcal diseases including pneumonia, meningitis, bloodstream infections (bacteremia), and ear infections (otitis media) caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae. It is approved for active immunization in adults 18 years and older, and in infants and children from 6 weeks through 17 years of age.
Prevnar 20 is a conjugate vaccine that contains purified capsular polysaccharides from 20 pneumococcal serotypes, each conjugated to a carrier protein. This formulation stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies against the pneumococcal bacteria without causing disease. Vaccination induces protective immunity against the covered serotypes.
Prevnar 20 is administered as an intramuscular injection. Common side effects may include injection site pain, fatigue, headache, and muscle pain. Individuals with severe allergic reactions to any component of the vaccine or to diphtheria toxoid should not receive this vaccine. Vaccination schedules vary by age and risk factors, and should be determined by a healthcare provider.
