Treatment of HIV-1 infection in combination with other antiretroviral agents. Approved for use in treatment-experienced adults and children (3 years and older), including those who have taken HIV medications before and those new to treatment.

Prezista is a protease inhibitor that binds to the HIV-1 protease enzyme, blocking its activity. This enzyme is essential for cleaving viral polyproteins into functional components needed for new viral particles. Without functional protease, HIV cannot replicate properly.

Always used with a pharmacokinetic booster (ritonavir or cobicistat) to increase effectiveness. Should be taken with food. May interact with many other medications. Not a cure for HIV and does not prevent transmission. Resistance testing is recommended before starting therapy.
