Probanthine is used to treat peptic ulcer disease, irritable bowel syndrome, gastrointestinal spasms, and hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating). It may also be used for urinary incontinence and as an antisecretory agent.
As an anticholinergic/antimuscarinic agent, Probanthine blocks acetylcholine from binding to muscarinic receptors in smooth muscle and glands, reducing secretions and relaxing GI smooth muscle, which decreases cramping and diarrhea.
Common side effects include dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, urinary retention, and drowsiness. Contraindicated in glaucoma, urinary obstruction, and myasthenia gravis. Use with caution in elderly patients. May interact with other anticholinergic medications and antihistamines.
