Prometrium is used to induce menstrual periods in women of childbearing age who have stopped menstruating, to prevent abnormal endometrial growth in postmenopausal women receiving estrogen hormone therapy, and to support early pregnancy in some fertility treatments.
As a form of bioidentical progesterone, Prometrium works by binding to progesterone receptors in the uterus and other tissues, helping to regulate the menstrual cycle and counteracting the effects of estrogen on the uterine lining.
This medication should not be used during pregnancy except for approved fertility indications. Common side effects include drowsiness (often taken at bedtime), dizziness, mood changes, and breast tenderness. Women with liver disease, certain cancers, or history of blood clots should discuss risks with their doctor before use.
