Qsymia is indicated for weight loss and weight maintenance in adults with obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m²) or overweight adults (BMI ≥27 kg/m²) with at least one weight-related comorbidity such as hypertension, type 2 diabetes, or dyslipidemia. It should be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and exercise program.

Qsymia combines two mechanisms: phentermine acts as an appetite suppressant by stimulating the central nervous system to reduce hunger signals, while topiramate appears to promote satiety and reduce appetite through its effects on neurotransmitter activity. Together, these components help patients consume fewer calories.

Qsymia is contraindicated during pregnancy due to risk of birth defects. Common side effects include tingling sensations, dizziness, altered taste, insomnia, and constipation. It should not be used in patients with glaucoma, hyperthyroidism, or recent MAOI use. Patients should have regular monitoring for heart rate changes and should not discontinue abruptly. This medication requires enrollment in a restricted distribution program due to its teratogenic potential.
