Quadramet is indicated for the relief of bone pain in patients with confirmed osteoblastic metastatic bone lesions, most commonly from prostate cancer and breast cancer. It is used when pain is inadequately controlled with conventional analgesics such as NSAIDs or opioids.

Quadramet contains samarium-153 bound to EDTMP (ethylenediaminetetramethylenephosphonic acid), a bone-seeking molecule. After intravenous administration, it localizes preferentially to areas of increased bone turnover, such as metastatic lesions. The radioactive samarium-153 emits beta radiation that targets nearby tumor cells and nerve endings in the bone, reducing pain signals.

Quadramet is administered as a single intravenous injection, typically by a nuclear medicine specialist. Pain relief usually begins within 1-2 weeks and can last several weeks to months. Patients should be monitored for myelosuppression (low blood counts), and standard radiation safety precautions are required. It is not intended for curative treatment and is used solely for palliative symptom management.
