Treatment of neuropathic pain associated with postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), which is chronic pain that can occur after an outbreak of herpes zoster (shingles) in adults.

Qutenza contains capsaicin, the active component responsible for the heat in chili peppers. When applied to the skin, capsaicin initially activates and then depletes substance P from sensory nerve endings, which reduces the transmission of pain signals and provides relief from neuropathic pain.

Qutenza must be applied by a healthcare professional. Patients may experience significant burning, stinging, or warmth at the application site during treatment. Avoid contact with eyes, mucous membranes, and other sensitive areas. Pre-treatment with topical anesthetics may be used to reduce discomfort. The patch is typically applied for 30 to 60 minutes per session.
