Published: July 26, 2026Updated: July 26, 2026

Radiogardase (Prussian blue) is a prescription medication used to treat internal contamination with radioactive cesium-137 or non-radioactive thallium. It works by binding to these radioactive or toxic substances in the gastrointestinal tract, preventing their absorption and facilitating their elimination from the body through feces. This medication is typically used following radiation emergencies or accidental exposure situations.

Quick summary

Radiogardase is an antidote for internal contamination with radioactive cesium or thallium that works by trapping these substances in the gut and promoting their excretion.

Treatment of known or suspected internal contamination with radioactive cesium-137 or thallium. Used primarily in radiation emergency scenarios, nuclear accidents, or accidental exposure situations where these radioactive or toxic materials have been ingested or inhaled.

Radiogardase contains Prussian blue particles that have a crystalline structure capable of trapping and binding cesium and thallium ions through ion exchange. Once bound, the radioactive materials are trapped within the gut lumen and eliminated with feces, reducing internal radiation exposure and toxicity.

Most effective when given promptly after contamination. May cause constipation, dark stools, and electrolyte imbalances. Should be taken with food to reduce gastrointestinal irritation. Treatment duration varies based on contamination levels. Adequate hydration is important during treatment.
