Ranexa is indicated for the treatment of chronic angina in adults. It is used when initial therapy with other anti-anginal medications (such as beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, or nitrates) is not providing adequate symptom control. It is not intended for acute episodes of chest pain.

Ranexa works by partially inhibiting the late inward sodium current in cardiac cells during the action potential. This reduces intracellular sodium and calcium accumulation, which decreases cardiac wall tension and oxygen demand during ischemic conditions. It also may improve coronary blood flow, helping to reduce angina symptoms.

Ranexa should be taken exactly as prescribed, typically twice daily with or without food. Common side effects may include dizziness, headache, constipation, and nausea. It can cause QT prolongation and should be used with caution in patients with liver impairment. Patients should avoid grapefruit juice while taking this medication. Ranexa is not a cure for heart disease and does not reduce the risk of heart attack.
