Rapaflo is FDA-approved for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in adult males. It helps relieve urinary symptoms such as difficulty starting urination, weak stream, frequent urination, and the need to urinate at night.
Rapaflo is an alpha-1A adrenergic receptor antagonist. It selectively blocks alpha-1A receptors in the smooth muscle of the prostate and bladder neck, causing these muscles to relax. This relaxation reduces pressure on the urethra and allows urine to flow more easily.
Rapaflo should not be used with strong CYP3A4 inhibitors or in patients with severe kidney or liver impairment. Common side effects may include retrograde ejaculation, dizziness, and orthostatic hypotension. Patients should be aware of potential interactions with other blood pressure medications and should avoid operating machinery until they know how the medication affects them. As with all alpha-blockers, a 'floppy iris syndrome' may occur during cataract surgery.
