Pyridostigmine
Regonol is a brand-name cholinesterase inhibitor containing pyridostigmine bromide. It is primarily used to treat myasthenia gravis, a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disorder characterized by muscle weakness and fatigue. The medication works by increasing acetylcholine levels at nerve synapses, thereby improving muscle strength and function in affected patients.

Regonol is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of myasthenia gravis, a condition causing muscle weakness and fatigue. It may also be used for intestinal atony (weakness of intestinal muscles) and post-operative urinary retention in some cases.
Regonol inhibits acetylcholinesterase, the enzyme responsible for breaking down acetylcholine. By preventing this breakdown, the medication increases acetylcholine concentrations at neuromuscular junctions, enhancing nerve signal transmission to muscles and improving contraction and strength.
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, increased salivation, and muscle cramps. The medication should be used with caution in patients with asthma, bradycardia, or mechanical intestinal or urinary obstruction. Dosing must be individualized based on patient response and should not be abruptly discontinued. Patients should inform their healthcare provider of all medications being taken to avoid interactions.
