Renvela is used to treat hyperphosphatemia (elevated blood phosphate levels) in patients with end-stage renal disease on dialysis. It is also sometimes prescribed for chronic kidney disease patients not yet on dialysis who have elevated phosphate levels that cannot be controlled through dietary phosphate restriction alone.

Renvela contains sevelamer carbonate, a non-absorbed phosphate-binding polymer. It works in the gastrointestinal tract by binding to dietary phosphate from food, forming an insoluble complex that is excreted in feces. By preventing phosphate absorption, it helps lower serum phosphate levels to target ranges established by clinical guidelines.

Renvela should be taken with meals as directed. It may reduce absorption of certain medications (such as ciprofloxacin, levothyroxine, and some anti-seizure medications), so doses should be spaced apart. Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain. Patients should maintain a phosphate-restricted diet while on this medication. Regular monitoring of serum phosphate, bicarbonate, and bicarbonate levels is required. The powder formulation should be mixed with the specified amount of water or another beverage before taking.
