Restoril is indicated for the short-term treatment of insomnia characterized by difficulty falling asleep, frequent nighttime awakenings, or early morning awakening.
As a benzodiazepine, Restoril enhances the effect of GABA, a neurotransmitter that reduces brain activity, producing a calming and sedating effect that facilitates sleep.
Restoril is typically prescribed for 7-10 days maximum due to risk of dependence, tolerance, and withdrawal. It should not be used by patients with a history of substance abuse, and may cause drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired coordination. Use with alcohol or other CNS depressants can be dangerous. Elderly patients are at increased risk for falls and cognitive impairment. Suddenly stopping after prolonged use can cause withdrawal symptoms.
