Retacrit is indicated for the treatment of anemia resulting from chronic kidney disease, chemotherapy-induced anemia in cancer patients, and anemia associated with zidovudine treatment for HIV. It may also be used to reduce the need for blood transfusions in surgical patients.
Retacrit works by binding to erythropoietin receptors on red blood cell precursors in the bone marrow, stimulating their proliferation and differentiation. This leads to increased production of red blood cells, which helps improve oxygen delivery throughout the body and alleviates symptoms of anemia.
Retacrit is administered as an injection and requires regular monitoring of hemoglobin levels to ensure appropriate response and avoid overcorrection. It may increase the risk of cardiovascular events, stroke, and thromboembolic complications. Blood pressure should be monitored regularly, and iron levels may need to be supplemented during treatment. Patients with uncontrolled hypertension or known hypersensitivity should not use this medication.
