Retevmo is indicated for the treatment of adults and pediatric patients (12 years and older) with metastatic RET fusion-positive non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), RET fusion-positive thyroid cancer requiring systemic therapy, and RET-mutant medullary thyroid cancer requiring systemic therapy. Treatment is specific to patients whose tumors have confirmed RET gene alterations.
Retevmo is a selective RET tyrosine kinase inhibitor. It works by blocking the activity of the RET (rearranged during transfection) receptor, which is abnormally active in certain cancers due to gene mutations or fusions. By inhibiting this signaling pathway, the medication helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells that depend on RET for their survival and proliferation.
Retevmo is available as an oral capsule. Common side effects may include fatigue, dry skin, diarrhea, constipation, hypertension, and edema. Serious risks include hepatotoxicity (liver problems), pneumonitis (lung inflammation), hypertension, cardiac dysfunction, and hemorrhagic events. It may cause fetal harm and should not be used during pregnancy. Patients should have their RET status confirmed by an FDA-approved test before starting treatment. Regular monitoring of liver function, blood pressure, and cardiac function is recommended during therapy.
