Rho(D) Immune Globulin

Published: July 26, 2026Updated: July 26, 2026

RhoGAM (Rho(D) immune globulin) is a prescription medication containing antibodies against the Rh(D) antigen on red blood cells. It is primarily used to prevent Rh sensitization in Rh-negative mothers who have been exposed to Rh-positive fetal blood, which can occur during pregnancy, delivery, miscarriage, abortion, or certain procedures. By preventing sensitization, it reduces the risk of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn in subsequent pregnancies.

Quick summary

RhoGAM prevents Rh-negative mothers from developing antibodies against Rh-positive fetal blood cells, protecting future pregnancies from complications.

Prevention of Rh isoimmunization in Rh-negative women during pregnancy, after miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, abortion, amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, cordocentesis, fetal surgery, trauma, or delivery of an Rh-positive baby. Also used in Rh-negative individuals who received Rh-positive blood transfusions.

Contains anti-Rh(D) antibodies (IgG) that bind to Rh(D)-positive red blood cells, preventing the Rh-negative mother's immune system from recognizing and mounting an immune response against these foreign antigens. This prevents sensitization that could attack future Rh-positive fetuses.

Administered via intramuscular injection, typically at 28 weeks gestation and within 72 hours after delivery or other sensitizing events. Not indicated for Rh-positive individuals or those already sensitized. May cause injection site reactions, fever, or mild allergic reactions. Does not affect the current pregnancy; protects future pregnancies.
