Riluzole

Published: July 26, 2026Updated: August 20, 2026

Riluzole is a glutamate inhibitor medication primarily used to treat amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disease affecting nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. By reducing glutamate activity, it helps slow disease progression and modestly extends survival in ALS patients. This medication is typically prescribed when ALS is confirmed or suspected.

Riluzole is FDA-approved for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). It is used to extend survival or delay the need for mechanical ventilation in patients with this condition.

Riluzole works by decreasing glutamate neurotransmitter activity in the brain. It inhibits the release of glutamate and blocks certain voltage-dependent sodium channels, which is believed to reduce excitotoxicity (nerve cell damage caused by excessive glutamate) that contributes to motor neuron degeneration in ALS.

Common side effects may include dizziness, nausea, and liver enzyme elevations. Regular liver function monitoring is recommended during treatment. Riluzole should be taken on an empty stomach, at least one hour before or two hours after meals. Women of childbearing potential should use effective contraception during treatment.
