Riomet is indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults and pediatric patients 10 years of age and older. It is used to improve glycemic control as an adjunct to diet and exercise.

Riomet works by decreasing hepatic glucose production (reducing the amount of sugar made by the liver), decreasing intestinal absorption of glucose, and improving insulin sensitivity in the body's tissues, allowing the body to use insulin more effectively.

Riomet should not be used in patients with severe kidney impairment, metabolic acidosis, or diabetic ketoacidosis. It may cause gastrointestinal side effects such as nausea and diarrhea. Lactic acidosis is a rare but serious risk, particularly in patients with kidney dysfunction, liver disease, or conditions causing hypoxia. Vitamin B12 levels should be monitored during prolonged use.
