Rocaltrol treats hypoparathyroidism (underactive parathyroid glands), renal osteodystrophy (bone disease from chronic kidney disease), and vitamin D-dependent rickets. It is also used to prevent and treat calcium deficiency in patients with these conditions.
As the active metabolite of vitamin D, calcitriol binds to vitamin D receptors to enhance intestinal absorption of calcium and phosphate, promoting proper bone mineralization and maintaining healthy serum calcium levels.
Rocaltrol should be used under medical supervision with regular monitoring of serum calcium levels, as excessive use can lead to hypercalcemia. Patients should avoid taking other vitamin D supplements concurrently unless directed by their healthcare provider. It is contraindicated in conditions involving high blood calcium levels or vitamin D toxicity.
