Romiplostim

Published: July 26, 2026Updated: July 26, 2026

Romiplostim (Nplate) is a thrombopoietin receptor agonist that stimulates platelet production by binding to and activating the TPO receptor on bone marrow cells. It is primarily used to treat chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) in adult and pediatric patients who have had an insufficient response to other treatments such as corticosteroids, immunoglobulins, or splenectomy.

Quick summary

Romiplostim is an injectable medication that helps increase platelet production in patients with chronic immune thrombocytopenia by mimicking the action of the body's natural thrombopoietin hormone.

Treatment of chronic immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) in adults and children 1 year and older who have had an inadequate response to corticosteroids, immunoglobulins, or splenectomy.

As a thrombopoietin receptor agonist, romiplostim binds to and activates the TPO receptor on megakaryocyte precursor cells in the bone marrow, stimulating increased platelet production through a mechanism analogous to endogenous thrombopoietin.

Administered as a weekly subcutaneous injection by a healthcare professional. Should not be used to normalize platelet counts. May increase risk of bone marrow reticulin formation and worsening thrombocytopenia after discontinuation. Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the product or its components. Regular platelet monitoring is required.
