Treatment of ventricular arrhythmias, including life-threatening conditions such as sustained ventricular tachycardia. Also used to maintain normal sinus rhythm in patients with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter.
Propafenone is a Class IC antiarrhythmic that works by blocking sodium channels in the heart muscle, which slows the rate at which the heart's electrical impulses are conducted. It also has mild beta-blocking and potassium channel blocking properties, helping to stabilize irregular heart rhythms.
Rythmol should only be used in patients with structural heart disease after careful evaluation of risks and benefits. It may cause new or worsening arrhythmias (proarrhythmic effects), and can affect heart rate, blood pressure, or cardiac conduction. Regular cardiac monitoring and liver function tests may be required. Avoid sudden discontinuation. May interact with other medications including blood thinners and beta-blockers.
