Vigabatrin
Sabril (vigabatrin) is a prescription anticonvulsant medication used to treat certain types of epilepsy when other treatments have not been effective. It is primarily prescribed for infantile spasms in children and as an adjunctive treatment for focal (partial) seizures in adults. The medication works by increasing levels of GABA, an inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain, which helps reduce seizure activity.

Sabril is indicated for the treatment of infantile spasms (West syndrome) in children and as adjunctive therapy for treatment-resistant focal (partial) seizures in adults when other antiepileptic drugs have not provided adequate seizure control.
Sabril works by irreversibly inhibiting GABA transaminase, an enzyme that breaks down GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). This increases GABA levels in the brain, enhancing inhibitory signaling and reducing neuronal excitability associated with seizures.
Sabril carries a risk of permanent vision loss, including peripheral visual field defects, which may be irreversible. Patients require regular ophthalmologic monitoring during treatment. Due to this risk, it is typically reserved for patients who have not responded to other epilepsy treatments. Common side effects may include drowsiness, fatigue, dizziness, and weight gain. Treatment should not be discontinued abruptly, and any discontinuation must be done under medical supervision.
