Sacrosidase

Published: July 26, 2026Updated: August 25, 2026

Sacrosidase is an oral enzyme replacement therapy containing the digestive enzyme sucrase, specifically indicated for the treatment of congenital sucrase-isomaltase deficiency (CSID). This rare genetic disorder impairs the body's ability to break down sucrose (table sugar) and isomaltose, leading to digestive symptoms. The medication helps patients digest sucrose-containing foods, reducing symptoms such as chronic diarrhea, abdominal pain, and bloating.

Quick summary

Sacrosidase is an enzyme replacement therapy that compensates for missing digestive enzymes in patients with congenital sucrase-isomaltase deficiency, allowing them to digest sucrose.

Congenital sucrase-isomaltase deficiency (CSID), a rare genetic disorder in which patients lack the enzymes sucrase and isomaltase needed to break down sucrose and isomaltose, resulting in inability to digest sugar and certain starches.

Sacrosidase provides exogenous sucrase enzyme that hydrolyzes (splits) sucrose into glucose and fructose in the intestinal lumen, enabling proper absorption of these sugars that would otherwise pass undigested and cause osmotic diarrhea.

Should be taken orally with each meal or snack; store at room temperature and use within 30 days of opening; should not be mixed with hot liquids as heat can inactivate the enzyme; patients should continue following a sucrose-restricted diet as directed by their healthcare provider; efficacy and safety have been established primarily in pediatric and adult patients with confirmed CSID.
