Saizen is used to treat growth hormone deficiency in children and adults, as well as growth failure associated with Turner syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, chronic renal insufficiency, and SHOX (short stature homeobox-containing) gene deficiency in children.
Saizen contains somatropin, a recombinant form of human growth hormone that binds to receptors in target tissues. It promotes growth by stimulating protein synthesis, increasing IGF-1 (insulin-like growth factor-1) production, and affecting fat and carbohydrate metabolism.
Saizen is administered by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection. Treatment should be supervised by a pediatric or adult endocrinologist. Common side effects may include injection site reactions, headaches, and fluid retention. It is contraindicated in patients with active malignancy, diabetic retinopathy, or closed epiphyses. Growth hormone therapy requires regular monitoring of growth response, IGF-1 levels, and potential adverse effects.
