Salicylic Acid

Published: July 26, 2026Updated: August 25, 2026

Salicylic Acid is a topical keratolytic medication commonly used to treat various skin conditions including acne, warts, calluses, corns, and psoriasis. It works by softening and loosening the outer layer of skin (keratin), allowing dead skin cells to shed more easily and helping to unclog pores.

Quick summary

Topical keratolytic agent used to treat acne, warts, and rough skin by promoting exfoliation of dead skin cells.

Treats acne, warts, calluses, corns, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, and other conditions involving excessive skin scaling or thickening. Commonly found in over-the-counter acne products and wart removal treatments.

As a keratolytic agent, salicylic acid softens keratin—the protein that forms the outer skin layer—allowing dead skin cells to shed. This helps unclog pores, reduce skin cell buildup, and smooth rough or scaly skin.

For topical use only; avoid contact with eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes. Not recommended for use on large body areas, moles, or broken skin. May cause skin irritation. Consult a healthcare provider before use if pregnant, breastfeeding, or have kidney problems. Children under 2 years should not use salicylic acid products.
