Sargramostim

Published: July 26, 2026Updated: July 26, 2026

Sargramostim is a granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) that stimulates the production and activation of white blood cells, particularly neutrophils and other immune cells. It is primarily used to treat conditions involving low white blood cell counts, such as chemotherapy-induced neutropenia, bone marrow transplant support, and to mobilize stem cells for collection. By promoting hematopoiesis, it helps reduce the risk of infections in patients with compromised immune function.

Quick summary

A growth factor medication that stimulates white blood cell production to prevent infections in patients with low immune cell counts.

Used to treat neutropenia (low neutrophil counts) associated with chemotherapy, bone marrow transplantation, and congenital neutropenia. Also used to mobilize hematopoietic stem cells for peripheral blood progenitor cell collection and transplantation.

Sargramostim binds to GM-CSF receptors on hematopoietic progenitor cells in the bone marrow, stimulating their survival, proliferation, and differentiation into mature white blood cells, particularly neutrophils and macrophages.

Administered by subcutaneous or intravenous injection. Common side effects may include fever, flu-like symptoms, bone pain, and injection site reactions. Should be used with caution in patients with heart or lung conditions. Not indicated for patients with known hypersensitivity to GM-CSF or yeast-derived products.
