Treatment of occasional constipation, including constipation associated with poor diet, lack of exercise, or certain medications. Also used for bowel preparation before medical procedures such as colonoscopy.
Sennosides work by stimulating the nerve endings in the lining of the intestines, which increases the rhythmic contractions of intestinal muscles. This promotes movement of stool through the colon. Additionally, they may increase fluid secretion into the intestines, softening the stool and making it easier to pass.
Typically produces bowel movements within 6-12 hours after oral administration. Not recommended for long-term daily use without medical supervision. May cause abdominal cramping or discomfort. Should be avoided in patients with certain intestinal conditions such as intestinal obstruction, appendicitis, or inflammatory bowel disease flare-ups. Consult a healthcare provider before use if pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking other medications.
