Chronic weight management in patients 6 years of age and older with obesity due to proopiomelanocortin (POMC), proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 1 (PCSK1), or leptin receptor (LEPR) deficiency, which are rare genetic disorders affecting the melanocortin pathway.
Setmelanotide acts as an agonist at melanocortin-4 (MC4) receptors in the brain. MC4 receptors play a key role in regulating hunger, satiety, and energy expenditure. By activating these receptors, setmelanotide reduces appetite signals and promotes increased energy expenditure to help patients achieve and maintain weight loss.
Administered as a once-daily subcutaneous injection. Patients should be monitored for skin reactions at injection sites and for potential adverse effects. The medication should be used as part of a comprehensive weight management program including diet and exercise. Discontinue if weight loss does not reach at least 5% after 12-16 weeks of treatment.
