Simponi is used to treat moderate to severe rheumatoid arthritis (often with methotrexate), psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and moderate to severe ulcerative colitis in adults.
Simponi is a monoclonal antibody that binds to and blocks TNF-alpha, a protein that promotes inflammation. By inhibiting TNF-alpha, it helps reduce the inflammatory response that causes symptoms in autoimmune conditions.
Simponi is administered by subcutaneous injection once monthly. As an immunosuppressant, it may increase the risk of serious infections, tuberculosis, and certain cancers. Patients should be screened for infections and hepatitis B before starting treatment. Live vaccines should be avoided during use. Common side effects include upper respiratory infections, redness at the injection site, and rash.
