Sirturo is indicated for the treatment of pulmonary multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in adults, as part of a combination therapy regimen when other standard TB medications cannot be used due to resistance.
Sirturo contains the active ingredient bedaquiline, which inhibits an enzyme called ATP synthase in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. By blocking this enzyme, the drug disrupts the bacteria's energy production, ultimately killing the TB bacteria.
Sirturo should always be used in combination with other anti-TB medications to prevent resistance development. It carries a boxed warning for the potential risk of QT prolongation (heart rhythm changes) and should not be used during pregnancy. Regular monitoring of liver function and electrocardiograms may be required during treatment.
