Overdose information

Important overdose information
Toxic dose: Dose of approximately 5 mg/kg body weight considered potentially toxic; serious toxicity and fatalities possible above 10 mg/kg
Chronic overdose: Prolonged intake exceeding 20 mg/day for several years may lead to skeletal fluorosis with bone and joint complications
Immediate actions
Administer calcium salts (calcium gluconate or calcium chloride) intravenously to bind fluoride; gastric lavage if ingestion within 1-2 hours; activated charcoal may be considered; monitor cardiac rhythm and serum electrolytes
Antidote
Calcium gluconate (calcium salts)(Highly effective when administered promptly to bind circulating fluoride ions and correct hypocalcemia; effectiveness decreases with delayed treatment)

Effectiveness in reducing dental caries

Sodium fluoride is used to prevent dental caries (tooth decay), treat dentinal hypersensitivity, and provide fluoride supplementation in communities with low fluoride in drinking water. It is suitable for both children and adults as a preventive dental treatment.

Fluoride ions incorporate into tooth enamel, forming fluorapatite which is more resistant to acid erosion from bacteria and sugars. It also inhibits bacterial growth and promotes remineralization of early carious lesions.

Available as toothpaste, mouthwash, varnish, tablets, and drops. Do not swallow toothpaste or mouthwash. Keep out of reach of young children. Overdose can cause fluorosis or toxicity—follow dosage instructions carefully based on age and local water fluoride levels.
