Treatment of leishmaniasis including visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar), cutaneous leishmaniasis, and mucocutaneous leishmaniasis caused by susceptible Leishmania species. Selection of therapy depends on geographic region and species involved.

The exact mechanism is not fully understood but is believed to involve inhibition of parasite energy metabolism and disruption of cellular processes. As a pentavalent antimonial compound, it is thought to be reduced to the trivalent form which is toxic to the Leishmania parasite.

Administered by slow intravenous or intramuscular injection. Requires monitoring of cardiac function (ECG), liver enzymes, and pancreatic enzymes during treatment. Contraindicated in patients with significant cardiac, hepatic, or renal disease. Common side effects include gastrointestinal symptoms, myalgia, and headache. Treatment is typically supervised in a clinical setting.
