Sodium Zirconium Cyclosilicate
Sodium Zirconium Cyclosilicate (LOKELMA) is a potassium binder used to treat high potassium levels in the blood (hyperkalemia). It works in the gastrointestinal tract by trapping potassium in exchange for hydrogen and sodium ions, allowing excess potassium to be excreted in stool. This medication is primarily used in adults with chronic kidney disease, heart failure, or those taking potassium-sparing diuretics or renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors.
A non-absorbed potassium binder that treats hyperkalemia by exchanging potassium for hydrogen and sodium ions in the gut.

Treatment of hyperkalemia in adults, particularly those with chronic kidney disease, heart failure, or patients on medications that increase potassium (such as RAAS inhibitors, potassium-sparing diuretics, or certain heart medications).
This zirconium silicate has high affinity for potassium ions and works locally in the gastrointestinal tract without systemic absorption. It preferentially exchanges potassium for hydrogen and sodium, trapping potassium within its crystalline structure and eliminating it through fecal excretion.
Non-absorbed medication (minimal systemic exposure); should be taken with food; may affect absorption of other medications; not recommended for emergency treatment of severe hyperkalemia; potassium levels should be monitored regularly during treatment.
